In order to eat in a healthy way, you need a well-balanced diet, and eat food from a variety of food groups to get the energy and nutrients your body requires. There is no specific type of food that will provide all the complete nutrients a human body needs – so it’s important to eat a wide range of foods.

The key to a healthy diet is to eat the correct amount of calories for your activity level, in order to balance the energy, you consume with the energy you use. If you eat or drink more than your body needs, you’ll put on weight because the energy you do not use is stored as fat. If you eat and drink too little, then of course, you’ll lose weight.
It’s recommended that men have around 2,500 calories a day (10,500 kilojoules). Women should have around 2,000 calories a day (8,400 kilojoules). Therefore keeping an eye on how many calories you’re eating is important to weight loss.
Base your meals on higher fibre starchy carbohydrates, which should make up just over a third of the food you eat. They include potatoes, bread, rice, pasta and cereals. Choose higher fibre or wholegrain varieties, such as whole-wheat pasta, brown rice or potatoes with their skins on.
Try to include at least one starchy food with your main meal. Some people think starchy foods are fattening, but gram for gram the carbohydrate they contain provides fewer than half the calories of fat. However, do keep an eye on the fats you add when cooking, as obviously this will increase the calorie content.
Eat your Fruit and Vegetables
Do eat lots of fruit and vegetables – It’s recommended that you eat at least 5 portions of fruit and veg every day. However, they can be fresh, frozen, canned, dried or juiced.
Try and eat more fish, including a portion of oily fish as fish is a good source of protein and contains lots of vitamins and minerals. Make your aim to eat at least two portions of fish a week, including at least 1 portion of oily fish. Also, oily fish are high in omega-3 fats, which may help prevent heart disease.
You can choose from fresh, frozen and canned, but do remember that canned and smoked fish can be quite high in salt.
Of course, you do need some fat in your diet, but it’s important to look at the type of fat you’re eating. There are 2 main types of fat: saturated and unsaturated. Too much saturated fat can increase the amount of cholesterol in the blood, which increases your risk of developing heart disease.
On average, men should have no more than 30g of saturated fat a day. On average, women should have no more than 20g of saturated fat a day.
Free sugars are any sugars added to foods and drink, or found naturally in honey, syrups and unsweetened fruit juices and smoothies. This is the type of sugar you should be cutting down on, rather than the sugar found in fruit and milk.
